Convenient Care continues to proliferate and attract significant interest from consumers and health care stakeholders. Retail based clinics are stimulating a debate about "right care, right provider, right time, right cost" as they respond to consumer demands for price transparency, quality and convenience. This presentation explores the evolving retail clinic environment with respect to hospital alliances, partnerships and sponsorships, and describes the current status of clinic operators, retailer perspectives, emerging business models, consumer reactions, physician responses, and payer relationships. This report also probes the legislative forces that are shaping the national supply of clinics, with special attention on the opportunities and challenges for hospital players to host retail clinics. Financial, legal and marketplace considerations will be explored.
Since they came onto the scene a few years ago, retail-based health clinics have attracted a great deal of attention from the media, the public, the medical establishment and investors. The model is straightforward: retail clinics offer a limited menu of medical services on a walk-in basis. They are typically staffed with Nurse Practitioners who provide diagnoses and prescriptions in about fifteen minutes, and are located inside retail stores, including drug, grocery and mass merchandisers.
Retail clinics have proliferated rapidly - from 62 clinics in January 2006 to more than 370 at the time of this report. They have also evolved from an interesting experiment to a nascent alternative model for providing routine medical services. Consumers across all socioeconomic groups are increasing their use of clinics and reporting high levels of satisfaction.
Healthcare providers are taking notice, with some entering the market as clinic operators, a few providing co-branding for clinic operators, and many watching from the sidelines to learn how they might deliver healthcare in new and more streamlined ways. Physician response has been mixed; the AAFP created a working partnership with retail clinic operators, whereas other provider groups have voiced concerns about quality and the erosion of the "medical home."
